ABOUT THE MAKER

Since 1400 BCE textile weaving has been an integral part of the culture and heritage of Mexico. It is a centuries-old trade that allows artisans to create beauty and share their stories. Ultimately, it is a trade that has become a way of life for many indigenous communities. The Zapotec and Aztec tribes started the creation of textiles utilizing the land, crafting string and dyes from plants and insects, later incorporating new methods, materials and styles introduced by the Spanish. Today, Mexican textiles are still majority produced by only a handful of indigenous cultures. Through cooperative and thoughtful collaboration, contemporary designers are aiding the evolution and protection of one of the world’s most enduring trades. The pieces they create showcase an intricate continuation of their history and culture that is truly special.
